The Lemonwood Quarterly

A new literary magazine for today's world

The Lemonwood Tree

Lemonwoods (Pittosporum eugenioides) are broadleaf flowering evergreen trees, native to New Zealand, but now found in many countries. Heteroblastic, the trees undergo an abrupt vegetative phase change when they reach full adulthood, whereby they morph from the compact cone shape of their early years into a wide-spreading canopy tree. Drought resistant and fast growing, lemonwoods are a favorite in forest restoration since they can quickly establish a shade canopy under which a diverse array of new forest plants can flourish. The Māori people were the first existing culture to know of the lemonwood tree. Called Tarata in the Māori language, the tree’s crushed leaves and flowers with their light citrus aroma are used in traditional medicines, hair oils and perfumes.

The Lemonwood Quarterly humbly aspires to provide a creative space in the spirit of our namesake: evergreen, sheltering, resistant, and healing.
Exquisite and fresh.
