Featured Writer from the Annals of History:

Katherine Mansfield (1888-1923), a member of the modernist movement, began writing short stories as a teenager in New Zealand. She moved permanently to Europe when she was 19, becoming part of the circle of modernists that included Virginia Woolf and D.H. Lawrence. She was strongly influenced by the short stories of Anton Chekov. Although she was married twice to different men, and had many male lovers, Katherine Mansfield was openly bisexual and her female lovers are well documented, both in her own journals and elsewhere. Her one documented pregnancy miscarried when she was 21 years old. Katherine Mansfield became an increasingly prolific and respected writer, especially in her late 20’s to early 30’s, after she was diagnosed with tuberculosis. Her last years were spent writing and in pursuit of a cure for her tuberculosis; she spent long stretches at sanitoriums and sought out experimental treatments. When she died of tuberculosis in 1923, at age 34, she left behind several published volumes of short stories and poetry, as well as a large body of work that her surviving husband, John Murray, published as two short story collections and one book of poetry. Her story, ‘The Stranger‘ appears in the Summer 2026 issue of The Lemonwood Quarterly.

The Lemonwood Quarterly’s Spring 2026 featured artist:

Nancy Panganiban is the Arts Editor for The Lemonwood Quarterly. She is primarily a painter and produces artwork that examines the natural world and its inhabitants, as well as our connection or disconnection to it. Working from her studio in Boise, Idaho, Nancy focuses on the natural sciences—especially geology and paleontology—the visual arts, and the fascinating intersection of the two realms. Nancy has participated in over 30 group shows and has had two solo shows, the latest in 2023 featured 40 paintings.  She has also been active in local arts organizations, including Treasure Valley Artist Alliance, Boise Open Studios, and Swell Artist Collective.  Nancy’s intricate mandala painting, Pollen Nation, appeared on the cover of the Spring 2025 issue of The Lemonwood Quarterly and the title page art for all the stories in that issue was created from details taken from that same mandala painting. Nancy Panganiban’s painting, Miao Dao, is featured on the cover of our Summer 2026 issue, and she contributed all the artwork for this issue’s eleven title pages. More of Nancy’s fabulous creations can be found on her website Art by Nancy Panganiban.
